Becoming a Proverbs 31 Woman: Lessons from King Lemuel’s Mother

As I was reading my Bible today, I came across Proverbs 31:10-31, which speaks about the virtuous woman—a woman of strength, wisdom, and diligence. This passage is part of a prophecy that King Lemuel’s mother taught him, advising him on what kind of woman he should marry. However, as I reflected on it, I realized that these qualities aren’t just about being a wife but about being a woman who handles her business—whether she’s married or not.
I’m 23 years old, and I’m still learning what it truly means to be a woman. Womanhood is a journey, not a destination, and I’m fresh on this topic, still figuring things out. As a young Black woman in today’s society, I know I’ll have more experiences that shape my understanding of this passage. I look forward to revisiting Proverbs 31 with new wisdom as I grow.
In a world that often tries to define womanhood in fleeting ways, Proverbs 31 reminds us of a deeper, more timeless standard. A virtuous woman is:
• Diligent in her work – “She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands” (v. 13).
• A provider and investor – “She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard” (v. 16).
• Strong and confident – “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come” (v. 25).
• A woman of faith and kindness – “She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue” (v. 26).
This is just the beginning for me, but it’s already reshaping my perspective on womanhood, purpose, and business. If you want to learn more, I recommend checking out Ken and Tabatha Clayton’s video on YouTube. They break it down beautifully and offer practical insights on how we can apply these principles to our lives today.
Let’s talk—what does being a Proverbs 31 woman mean to you? Whether in business, relationships, or personal growth, how do you see these qualities showing up in your life?
