“And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.” – Exodus 4:10
When God called Moses to lead His people, Moses didn’t feel qualified. He had a speech impediment and was afraid—he doubted himself, his abilities, and ultimately, God’s plan for him. But the Lord responded powerfully:
“Who hath made man’s mouth? Or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Have not I the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.” – Exodus 4:11-12
I relate to Moses on a deep level because, as a kid, I had a speech impediment. I stuttered heavily, and if you’ve ever struggled with stuttering, you know it’s not something you can just stop. It’s like a tremor—you feel the words in your mind moving fast, but your mouth won’t catch up. It’s involuntary, and the more you try to control it, the worse it gets.
By the grace of God, I don’t struggle with it as much anymore. It still happens sometimes—my two triggers are hearing someone else stutter and when I get really mad (and trust me, if I start stuttering because I’m tight, just know it’s time to back up!😂). But looking at where I am now, compared to where I was as a child, it’s a testimony in itself.
Moses’ story reminds me that God doesn’t call the qualified—He qualifies the called. He created each of us exactly as we are, imperfections and all, and He still has a plan for us. Whatever you think is holding you back, whatever weakness you feel like disqualifies you, God already factored that in. And just like He told Moses, He will be with you.
So today, I just want to encourage you: don’t let your struggles define you. The Lord is with you, guiding you, strengthening you, and equipping you for the purpose He has for you. You just have to trust Him and go.
